Session Description: 

This session will use the biopsychosocial model to outline evidence-based psychological and behavioral strategies to help patients
manage the most common side and late effects of cancer treatment, such as fatigue, pain, and insomnia. Dr. Kilkus will draw on case
examples to assist participants in applying these concepts to real cases, using an interactive framework.

Dr Jennifer Kilkus, Board Certified Clinical Health Psychologist; Yale University School of Medicine and University Hospital Waterford

Dr Jennifer Kilkus, PhD, ABPP, is a board-certified clinical health psychologist and the author of Navigating Cancer: Research
Supported Tools to Help You Cope with the Emotional and Physical Impact of Cancer. Her career is focused on improving the quality of life of people with cancer through evidence-based psychotherapy and the development and enhancement of psychosocial programming in cancer centers world-wide. She has recently relocated from the U.S. to Ireland to develop psycho-oncology programming for Ireland’s public health service. She continues to hold an Assistant Clinical Professor position within the Department of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine in Connecticut.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Explain the biopsychosocial model and the role of cancer treatment in maintaining and exacerbating prolonged symptoms and side effects;
  2. Apply the biopsychosocial model to identify intervention targets for common side and late effects of cancer treatment;
  3. Use evidence-based psychological strategies for managing the consequences of cancer treatment.
