Survivorship and Post-Traumatic Growth: Helping Oncology Patients Embrace the Journey

Social Work Counselors in oncology settings are called to walk with patients and caregivers throughout their cancer journey while wearing multiple hats. Oftentimes, our work environment focuses on illness, grief/loss, and trauma. However, there is another area of coping and support that receives less attention and focus: Post-Traumatic Growth. Yet, its role can be a powerful agent for our patient’s and loved ones Spiritual and Emotional Growth if it is attended to in an open and curious manner. This presentation will explore the literature around Survivorship and Post-Traumatic-Growth and how to enhance our tools as clinicians to draw on this resource for our patients.

- Develop increased knowledge of the possible benefits of exploring this topic with our patients to help them restore meaning and purpose in their lives
- Assess for Post-Traumatic Growth within our Survivorship population
- Identify ways to implement this into your practice with oncology patients across the continuum of their cancer journey
Presenter
Tiffany Huddleston, LCSW
Tiffany Huddleston, LCSW, is a therapist with over 17 years of experience treating adolescents and adults in a variety of therapeutic settings. She is currently a Senior Social Work Counselor at MD Anderson working in the Critical Care Unit.
Tiffany helps patients and their loved ones navigate the many challenges they face during the cancer journey; often at one of the most difficult stages: end-of-life. Tiffany also supports a dynamic, interdisciplinary team with coordinating and facilitating Goals of Care conversations.
She is an avid yoga practitioner and facilitates mindfulness and wellness-related workshops throughout the institution and community. Tiffany combines her passion for therapy and wellness to encourage and aid others to live their best and fullest lives.

12:00 p.m. – 12:15 p.m.: Define the social work role when addressing sexual health with clients in an oncology setting.
12:16 p.m. – 12:30 p.m.: Identify the importance of self awareness and the ethical considerations social workers need to be cognizant of when working with clients of various backgrounds.
12:31 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.: Utilize assessment tools to guide discussions with patients regarding sexual health, intimacy,and relational needs.

GRIEVANCE POLICY: ASOW will comply with all legal and ethical responsibilities to be non-discriminatory in promotional activities, program content and in the treatment of program participants. The monitoring and assessment of compliance with these standards will be responsibility of the Education Director in consultation with the Education Chair and clinical director from committee. We do our best to anticipate problems and, when they do present themselves, will attempt to alleviate complaints as quickly as possible. When a complaint, either verbally or written, is received, the following guidelines are followed with respect to achieving resolution: (1) Complaints relative to a speaker or workshop leader, contents of instructional materials being presented, or an individual educational style being utilized, the individual voicing disapproval is requested to place his/her comments in writing. An AOSW representative will convey these comments to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the grieved individual. (2) If the complaint concerns a continuing education activity, its content, level of presentation, or facilities in which the event is being held, the representative in charge will attempt to resolve the matter as expeditiously as possible. If the offered resolution (resolutions offered may include, but not be limited to partial/full refund of registration fees paid; credit toward future event) not satisfactory to the individual filing the complaint, then further action may be taken as follows. (3) The individual is requested to place his/her complaint in writing to the attention of the Education Director, The Association of Oncology Social Work, AOSW Headquarters, 111 W. Jackson Blvd. Suite 1412, Chicago, IL 60604. The complaint is then reviewed by the Education Director in consultation with the Clinical Director and Education Advisor. A written response will be issued within 30-days of receipt of the written complaint.
