The Board of Oncology Social Work Certification (BOSWC) has been busy reviewing its bylaws, applications and hopefully moving forward with some updates to bring it into the 21st century!
Change is slow but so needed! These updates were in response to a survey and ongoing feedback from oncology social workers who hold or held the OSW-C credential, research and industry trends. The BOSWC has approved a number of revisions regarding the certification criteria. These revisions went into effect September 1, 2018. Even as this article has been prepared, changes have occurred! All of the updates will be posted to the website (www.oswcert.org) in the very near future.
Recently, the BOSWC voted to withdraw the requirement of membership in any professional organization. This was based on several factors, including recent trends among various credentialing organizations and in no way meant to diminish the importance of professional membership organizations.
New/Initial Applications
Applicants must have the equivalent of three years of paid full-time MSW social work experience post MSW degree (6,240 paid hours) within the most recent five years, specifically in oncology, end of life and/or palliative care. Applicants must now show proof of at least two qualifying community engagement/leadership activities.
Renewal Applications
These revisions went into effect September 1, 2018. However, between September 1, 2018, and September 1, 2019, an applicant has the option to renew under the old guidelines or the new guidelines. Revisions include:
- Applicants must now meet two qualifying community engagement/leadership activities.
- Renewal applications must include proof of at least 20 CEUs specific to oncology, end of life and/or palliative care within the previous two year certification period. For example, if your OSW-C expires October 31, 2018, your CEUs must be earned between October 31, 2016, and October 31, 2018. Acceptable proof is a CEU certificate. These programs can be in-person or online.
- There are also updated requirements if your OSW-C has lapsed and you wish to renew within one or two years of your certification expiring. Please contact the BOSWC Coordinator for specifics for your particular circumstances.
- Finally, the BOSWC initiated an Emeritus Status for retired oncology social workers. The OSW-CE is a designation of distinction bestowed upon retired OSW-C social workers who have consistently over time contributed to the mission of BOSWC and met the criteria of OSW-C.
