Book Review: “Childhood Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors: A Guide for Families, Friends and Caregivers (2nd Ed.),” by Tania Shiminski-Maher, Catherine Woodman, and Nancy Keene
This book is an extremely thorough manual to help anyone understand the diagnosis, treatment and many emotional effects of childhood brain and spinal cord tumors.
The book opens with the experience of receiving a diagnosis—symptoms, various types of tumors, emotional responses and where to go for specialized treatment. There is a detailed explanation about the anatomy of the brain and spinal cord, which is helpful in understanding the diagnosis and the many complications that may arise.
Helpful information on how to tell a child about their diagnosis, questions to ask prior to consenting to surgery, guidelines for calling the doctor during treatment, a list of side effects for various chemotherapies and a check list for parenting stressed children are provided. Specifics of keeping medical records on the child’s treatment, managing finances and signs and symptoms of reoccurrence are included, as well as information on everyday issues faced when dealing with childhood cancer and help for parents in advocating for themselves and for their children during and after treatment.
The book is well written and easy to understand. Sections are clearly labeled, making it easy for readers to locate the subject matter they are most interested in. Explanations provided are clearly explained and concise. There is even practical advice for getting along with medical staff, caring for siblings during treatment, handling nutritional challenges, arranging specialized school support and a useful description of medical and psychological staff credentials.
Unique to this book are personal stories throughout from children and parents. Their experiences include content that is extremely honest and reflective of both positives and challenges. The stories provide great insight into the disease, treatments and side effects, as well as helpful ideas and suggestions on a variety of issues.
This book would be a great resource for anyone starting out or needing a complete understanding of both the medical and psychological issues related to pediatric patients with brain and spinal cord tumors. The information is well researched, clear and thoroughly presented. It provides an overall understanding of the major topics a family will encounter when dealing with pediatric cancer. This is an incredible resource for families as well as professionals.
