Give me a “S”, Give me an “I” Give me a “G” – what do we have? “SIG” – what does it mean?
By Chelsea Kroll, LMSW, OSW-C
AOSW Director at Large, Special Interest Groups
If you don’t already know, SIG is the acronym for Special Interest Group, and as an AOSW member, you have an added member benefit of access to any and all of our 17 special interest groups (SIGs). These groups provide opportunities for increasing networking, knowledge and connecting with other oncology social workers who share similar interests or work.
Each of our 17 SIGs is led by volunteer members committed to the growth and development of the groups while also serving as a resource.
In 2024, we added a new SIG: Caregivers, Partners and Co-Survivors. Additionally, the leadership in other SIGs transitioned in both 2024 and 2025. Thank you to the leaders who so graciously gave of their time and wisdom in not only being at the helm of the SIG ships, but also in the transition to the new leadership.
While you do not have to be a member of a SIG to attend the meetings, the benefits of membership allow you access to the communities. In each specific SIG community, you will find articles/documents posted by leaders as well as see any discussions. To join a SIG, please follow the directions here. SIG leaders hold their meetings at various times, so please watch out for the invite on SWON and on the AOSW Calendar of Events.
The following SIGs plan to hold in person meetings in Atlanta:
- Caregivers, Partners and Co-Survivors
- Patient Navigation
- Sexual Health
- Radiation Therapy
- Research
- Virtual Health
Our SIGs are an integral part of our organization, and our leaders are vested in the continued development of them. For those leaders attending the conference, you can identify them by the SIG leader ribbon attached to their name tags. They welcome the opportunity to discuss their SIGs and opportunities to become involved.
