As we approach the close of another year, I find myself reflecting on the profound and often unseen contributions of caregivers — the family members, friends, and loved ones who stand alongside patients throughout the cancer journey.
In oncology social work, we have the unique privilege of witnessing caregiving in all its complexity — the love, the fatigue, the fear, the courage. Caregivers hold an extraordinary dual role: they are both the anchor and the sail, providing stability while navigating uncharted waters. Their devotion reminds us daily that cancer care is never experienced in isolation; it is a shared journey of resilience and hope.
This quarter, as AOSW centers our focus on caregivers, I want to recognize the essential role social workers play in supporting this vital part of the care team. Whether through emotional counseling, resource navigation, or advocating for caregiver inclusion in treatment planning, social workers ensure that caregivers are seen, heard, and supported. Our interventions ripple outward — strengthening not only the caregiver’s wellbeing but also the patient’s overall experience of care.
As I reflect on 2025, I am in awe of the incredible work of the AOSW Board, who represent our entire community with such passion and purpose. Your primary goal of putting our colleagues first is evident in how you show up — challenging the status quo, finding new ways to elevate our profession, and ensuring that AOSW remains a strong and vibrant organization. I thank you for your dedication and for your unwavering support in the continued success of AOSW and its valued partnerships.
As I transition out of the role of President, it is my pleasure to welcome Meredith Cammarata, LCSW-R, into this leadership position. Meredith’s commitment, insight, and compassion will continue to move our organization forward in meaningful ways. I look forward to supporting her behind the scenes as she leads AOSW into its next chapter of growth and impact.
As we enter a season of gratitude, let us renew our commitment to holistic care — care that embraces the full circle of those affected by cancer. Let’s continue to elevate caregiver voices, promote caregiver-inclusive practices in our institutions, and remind our communities that caring for the caregiver is an act of compassion that sustains the entire system of healing.
To every AOSW member who walks beside patients and caregivers alike — thank you. Your dedication embodies the heart of oncology social work. And to every caregiver — your compassion and perseverance inspire us all.
With appreciation and warmth,
Linda Mathew, DSW, MSW, LCSW-R
