How long have you been an oncology social worker?
I’ve worked in adult oncology since 2004—about 12 years!
Where do you currently work? What is your position? How long have you been there?
I have been with the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University since 2006. First I was with the Bone Marrow Transplant team and the Hematology Department; in 2015 I moved to the Department of Radiation Oncology.
Previously, I worked in oncology at Miami Children’s Hospital (1991-2004). While my position primarily addressed pediatric trauma, child abuse and neglect, we also addressed the multiple needs of the pediatric population facing hard decisions for their care—including pediatric hospice referrals, end-of-life care, death and grief, how to tell a child they have cancer and sharing news such as necessary surgery to remove a limb. Additionally, I worked with Hospice of the Florida Keys, 1994-1996. I also worked at Baptist Homestead Hospital, 1996-2004, two jobs side-by-side, one night shift/one day shift for about eight years.
Where did you earn your degree(s)?
I earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Pennsylvania, going to school at night, part time, in Philadelphia while maintaining two jobs (one during normal business hours at an outpatient mental health clinic and one working the “night shift” at Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute). I received a Bachelor of Arts from Lehigh University.
How long have you been a member of AOSW?
I’m a recent member of AOSW—2016.
Have you attended the AOSW Annual Conference? When/where?
Not yet!
Other professional affiliations?
I am a member of NASW, ATSS (Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists) and NAFC (National Association of Forensic Counselors). I hold certifications in trauma support and domestic violence, am a licensed clinical social worker here in Georgia and an oncology certified social worker.
In your role as an oncology social worker/clinician, what is one of your favorite resources to share with clients? Why?
One of my favorite resources is Happy Tails Pet Therapy. Happy Tails has been in place at Winship since 2011 with four-legged and two-legged volunteers. Having observed patients struggle with leaving their furry ones behind while in treatment, my goal was having Happy Tails visit us and bring the love and attention that only animals can provide. I enjoy seeing faces light up when the pups walk in and look to see who needs some love that day. They brighten the mood and give the staff something to smile about that day.
In your experience with survivors, would you share a memorable story with us? One that moved you?
Each survivor is special and has come to teach me something about surviving with cancer. Each day I look for something to learn so I can be a better social worker while helping others.
In that “little something more” section, what is one thing you might share with us about you personally, one that is outside your work life?
On my off time, I’m always training for something! I am an outdoor enthusiast. I camp, hike and engage in rock climbing—all the risks that make me more level headed once my feet are back on the ground! I have a French bulldog whom I adore, who shares with me the trails I’ve discovered over the years. I’m also a “cross fitter” and hold a certification related to fitness. Next up: I’m training for a long distance endurance swim on the Chattahoochee River this summer.
